Information on Criminal Records Checks (CRC)

Victorian schools require teachers to carry proof of current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration and criminal records check (CRC). Resource Ed Personnel also requires the same documentation in the form of certified photocopies of VIT registration and a current CRC to obtain work with our client schools or institutions. It is the teacher's responsibility to ensure they keep their registration requirements up to date. Resource Ed Personnel can only offer work when we have proof of current VIT registration and CRC.

Procedures to source a criminal records check (CRC)

OPTION 1:

Through the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), our preferred option.

Go the VIT's web site www.vit.vic.edu.au
Top of home page – Forms
Scroll to Other: National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) (pdf 116KB)
Print out and fill in the required sections. (Please make 2 photocopies for your archival purposes)
Post the original with the required costs to the VIT and refer to Do I need a Statutory Declaration section below?

OPTION 2:

Through a Department of Education School (DET)

If a teacher needs a CRC, they must:

Go to your local DE&T School and apply online for the CRC. Alternatively, fill in the Consent to Check and Release National Police Record form on our web site and take that to your local school.
Have your current VIT card.
Be able to show the school principal your 100 Point ID. Birth certificate (70 points) Drivers licence (40 points) Firearm licence (40 points) Credit Card/Medicare Card/Health Care Provider card (25 points)
The school will supply a signed and dated Statutory Declaration after the application has been made for the CRC. This Statutory Declaration is important, as your proof of CRC application.
When you receive your CRC from the DE&T, copy and certify it, then send the copy to Resource Ed.

Do I Need a Statutory Declaration?

If your CRC is out of date or just about to expire, you will need further proof of CRC application via a Statutory Declaration. This enables you to teach while waiting for your CRC.

Print and fill in the required fields
Make at least 2 photocopies of the declaration

The Statutory Declaration is valid for one month. If we do not receive your certified copy of your new CRC within a month, our systems will not recognise your availability.

Soon to be out of date CRC - one month or more before expiry.

In this case you probably do not need to supply a Statutory Declaration to us. Your new CRC should be sent to you within a month of application.

However, if registering to join REdP for the first time, we do require a certified copy of your CRC. If you are renewing your CRC and applying to join REdP, we require certified copies of your CRC application and a completed Statutory Declaration as well.

Please send certified copies of your CRC application and Statutory Declaration (if needed) to us for verification purposes.

Conduct & Ethics Department of the DET

All applications to join REdP are sent to the Department of Education & Training for approval. This can mean up to a 3 day delay before final registration with REdP.

Independent and Catholic schools also require a current VIT card with

Provisional Registration on the card
Full Registration with CRC printed on the card
Full registration with current Victorian or National Police Check. Allows you to teach in only these types of schools.
